A conceptual layer in storytelling

The hotel’s creative narrative, alchemy, is brought to life throughout the guest journey with individual spaces attributed to each stage.

Distillation is encapsulated in haute cocktail bar Flaggerdoot
Fermentation is the chandelier in hatted restaurant Doot Doot Doot
Incineration in the guest hallways with the neon lights
Fixation is the landscape surrounding the hotel, especially the kitchen garden
Projection is the guest rooms, looking out to the intoxicating vistas
Crystallisation is the magnificent Geode
Multiplication is the jet black infinity pool.

The creative expression of the hotel is given further life through a series of creative commissions by world-renowned artists and designers – the specific alchemic stages evident in each installation and the hotel’s collection as a whole.

Jackalope Art Collection’s curatorial concept presents rebellious pieces as a conceptual layer in storytelling for our guests to explore and consider. Often immersive, these pieces are used to create transformative experiences in a hospitality landscape, taking guests on a journey through an ever-evolving world of emotions and expressions during their stay.

The privately owned collection currently on display comprises international works by Rick Owens, Rolf Sachs, Emily Floyd, Christopher Boots and Random International (situated at Jackalope Pavilion, St Kilda).

Jackalope by Emily Floyd

Located in the Piazza
A towering idol of the property, Melbourne-based artist Emily Floyd’s ‘Jackalope’ is a seven-metre-high ode to the mythical creature. The sculpture is comprised of aluminum and painted starkly in black automotive paint, its contrasting golden antlers represent fierceness to all elements.

Chemistry Light by Rolf Sachs

Located next to the entrance of Flaggerdoot
Created by conceptual artist and designer, Rolf Sachs, this light is fashioned from standardised chemistry equipment. The flowing cables give it a sense of movement and flow akin to the human body, transcending its natural functionality, and creating something unique, yet familiar.

Electric Blue Pool Table By Harry Evans & Sons

Located in Flaggerdoot
A vibrant restoration to an original 1960s pool table built by Harry Evans, the current iteration features its now signature electric blue surface and white-painted exterior, a modernising transformation of the legacy by Harry’s own son.

Stag Bench by Rick Owens

Located in Flaggerdoot
Crafted by the American fashion titan in Paris, the stag bench is part of Rick Owen’s inaugural furniture collection that he debuted in 2007. The piece can be seen as a direct extension of his fashion lines and overall multi-dimensional aesthetic, creating sculptural pieces that verge on art yet function as furniture with a blending of antlers to alabaster, and wood to smooth stone.

Glass Vessels

Located in Flaggerdoot
Harkening back to the traditional practices of alchemy, these bespoke-made glass vessels stand as a prism of reflection, a backdrop of originality to the conceptually-forward space of Flaggerdoot.

The conversation, the whisper, the silence by Andrew Hazewinkle

Located in Flaggerdoot and the Hallway
Mornington Peninsula-born artist Andrew Hazewinkle’s busts explore the complex interactions between history and memory and the breakdown of conversation.

Located throughout Jackalope, each piece represents a different space of connection, from Flaggerdoot’s cluster of four that evokes lively articulation to the two at the hallway entrance that promote contemplation— and finally, the single head at the hallway’s end which signifies quietness and rest.

Light Installation By Jan Flook

Located in Doot Doot Doot
Comprised of over 10,00 contrasting-shaped globes, the bespoke light installation designed by Jan Flook that covers the ceiling of Doot Doot Doot has been crafted to create the surreal sensation of fermenting wine, bubbling above. The lights dim and shift in colour providing a wave of oscillation and movement. Each bulb was individually connected and took two full weeks to completely install.

The Midas Touch

Located within the Jackalope Gardens
Located throughout the gardens these everyday objects have been turned to gold and stand poised amongst the flora and fauna that surround them—a showcasing of the prestige of tools and craftmanship.
